Corrosion of Selling Out Gramercy Theater
Corrosion of Conformity returns to New York City for the first time in nearly a year. The ultimate sludge metal band, with their hint of southern rock, give them an original sound that is not replicated at all. Along for the ride are Doom Legends Crowbar, The Stoner Messiahs, Weedeater and the new Heavy Metal act Mothership. For those looking for a groovy metal show, Corrosion of Conformity’s headliner will give you that fix.
Corrosion of Conformity’s set turned out to be totally hyped up, heavy and long. Pepper Keenan’s voice is absolutely mesmerizing in a live setting. It’s powerful and pleasing, while keeping you hooked on COC’s sound. Despite being a pure sludge metal band, their sound is more or less based upon a more groovier Black Sabbath, while also taking a fast paced sound element approach found in acts like Creedence Clearwater Revival & The Rolling Stones. Their set was a long and power one featuring classics like “Clean my Wounds”, “Wiseblood”, “Albatross”, “Seven Days” and much more. Older fans of COC got a set that favorably appealed to them to keep the old and new together.
Crowbar is probably one of the most reserved Sludge Metal acts of all time. It’s a sound that is ultra heavy and extremely morbid in many possible ways. Their music manages to slow down to bring in a very ominous mood. Crowbar has also been doing plenty of non stop touring. They were supporting Hatebreed on a Spring tour last year and were fresh off a winter 2018 tour with Killswitch Engage. Now they’re back on to road again ASAP with COC. Crowbar’s set featured many of heavy staples like “Planets Collide”, “(All I Had, I Gave)”, “Walk with Knowledge Wisely” and much more. Vocalist Kirk Windstein deals grisly vocals to the audience. It’s a sound that is extremely powerful and fits with Crowbar’s music so well. Crowbar is an absolutely true fit for this tour and it is incredible that they keep getting on such solid tour packages in such a short period of time. The fans were never idle during the show, showing off a good form of happy aggression in the mosh pit. The crowd participation was tight and very effective.
Overall Corrosion of Conformity brought an incredible tour package to New York City. For fans of Sludge & Doom, this was something you could not miss. Corrosion of Conformity provided excellent, countless grooves for their fans, Crowbar brought the heavy down as expected, Weedeater slowed down the pace significantly, but brought their own spin of music to this wonderful tour, now with much strength personal strength after the death of their previous drummer Carlos Denogean. It’s good to see the band continue to be stronger than ever.
