Scorsese has demonstrated his passion for rock music in past films such as his 2019 documentary take, Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story, however, this Grateful Dead film project reserved for Apple would be his first biopic.
The film will be produced through Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby company.
Reports say Apple secured rights to used Grateful Dead music for the film, to be executive produced by surviving band members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, including Garcia’s daughter Trixie Garcia.
American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are set to write the film script. The production will reunite Scorsese and Hill since their prior collaboration on 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, while important to also point out that Scorsese executive produced Grateful Dead’s 2017 documentary Long Strange Trip.
The Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and were among a force of pioneers in rock music from the 60’s until Garcia’s death in 1995.
