Review: All That Coil at Webster Hall
All That Remains and Lacuna Coil are teaming up for one of the most interesting tour packages for the fall season! With a good dose of groovy rock music and very intense metal you’re getting a tour package that really applies to the best of both worlds for many different fans. Support for this tour includes Bad Omens, Toothgrinder and Uncured along for the ride! If you’re looking to get a great music fix this fall with some many interesting bands, then it doesn’t get much better than the “Disease Of The Anima” tour! Plus, this show is my first return back to Webster Hall for the first time in two years after the venue was out of service for a bit!
I caught All That Remains in the late Spring earlier this year in Long Island and I’m really psyched that I got to see them again in my hometown! All That Remains took advantage of the bigger stage set up with a slightly flashier presentation. Midway through the set, front-man Phil Labonte asked if the fans wanted to hear some older songs. Oh boy, did he deliver on that promise. The band played their three biggest hits off their 2006 album, “The fall of ideals” which included “Not Alone”, “Six” and “The Air I Breathe” a great call back for all of the fans who’ve been wanting to hear the heavier songs from the extensive catalog All That Remains provides. The band seamlessly transitioned from so many fantastic songs in such a short period of time. I’m glad to say the band is still just as tight as ever before, despite numerous lineup changes and last year’s recent passing of founding guitarist Oli Herbert. All That Remains continues to triumph above everything else to be one of metalcore’s brightest stars.
Lacuna Coil’s musicianship stands true above anything else, especially in New York City. After selling out New York’s very own Gramercy Theater over the summertime, it’s great to see that the band returned so soon to help fans ease their wait for another amazing Lacuna Coil show! With the dual vocal harmonies of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro both of these vocalists show off amazing talents to blend together a style that is rarely seen in heavy metal. Scabbia uses her opera like melodies to make sure the audience is in awe when she begins to sing, while Ferro uses a range that’s equivalent to alternative metal to give Lacuna Coil’s live shows an extraordinary amount of power while also throwing in plenty of harsh melodies to keep the crowd amped up. Lacuna Coil’s set-list featured hits like “Trip the Darkness”, “Our Truth” and “Heaven’s A Lie”. Lacuna Coil brought together a fantastic show for many hungry New York City fans and they’ll keep on coming back for more, no matter what.
Despite some of the controversy Bad Omens faced earlier with The Amity Affliction and Senses Fail. (It was so bad, the band dropped off the tour they were supposed to be on.) No matter where Bad Omens plays. You know they will always manage to draw up a crowd for their hardcore fans and unsuspecting newcomers. Bad Omens was also the first band of the night to really get the mosh pit really going, so you know they have a sound that really goes out. Bad Omens has a sound that’s heavily inspired by Bring me the Horizon’s landmark 2013 album “Sempiternal”, they basically take elements of that album and push it into their own sound. Vocalist, Noah Sebastian mostly uses a great amount of cleans to keep Bad Omens on the melodic side of metalcore, while occasionally though you will hear some good heavy vocals come out from Noah and it all comes together for a good time. Guitarist, Joakim Karlsson plays some very simple, but incredibly effective guitar passages to keep headbangers throughout the venue having a good time. Bad Omens plays a great set as well, with hits like “Glass Houses”, “Malice” and “The Worst in Me” amplifying the energy up to 11. Bad Omens overall really showed off what they could do for plenty of their fans.
Toothgrinder’s progressive metal outings have seen them grow steadier and steadier over time. They are such a fantastic fit for this tour, I cannot stress that enough. Featuring enough cleans to draw in some mainstream fans and enough heaviness for those who want to have an amazing time at their shows. The sound merges djent and rock music to a cutting tooth, maybe that’s why the name of the band is Toothgrinder (haha). With that sound in mind, Toothgrinder has opened up for a number of diverse acts like Between the Buried and Me, Bullet for my Valentine, Periphery and Meshuggah. Toothgrinder’s set opened up with a cover of the Fleetwood Mac song, “The Chain”! Which is a great way to surprise the crowd! But then, the band went into their hits like “Blue” and “The Shadow” Also, vocalist Justin Matthews took a nasty fall as the crowd couldn’t support him fully while he was crowd surfing. But thankfully, the man was able to get right back and continue his set like it was nothing. This guy truly is a warrior, that’s for sure. Guitarist Jason Goss provides a very beefy rhythm section that amplifies the sound of djent, but it also plays plenty of cues that really hit djent’s stride. Toothgrinder is a band that can truly appeal to all fans and I’m very happy I was able to catch them again.
Uncured is one of the newest bands in metal and one that is rising up to make sure they’ll be staying on the road for a long time to come. I saw these guys play on two massive tours earlier this year, that being Chaos and Carnage at New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom with Whitechapel and Dying Fetus! Plus, as a special guest at Gramercy Theater for Born of Osiris’s Simulation Tour! Uncured’s music is like a mix of Trivium meets Shadows Fall. With plenty of heavy chugs, guitar riffs for days and lots of extortionary screams! Uncured is really trying to blend together the best of both worlds with the sounds they want to accomplish. They are a band that has a sound that can really work with the best of both worlds to play with so many different bands and I really appreciate that they will never stop touring. The dual vocal assault from brothers Zak Cox and Rex Cox (Who also both play guitar) really show off the prowess that Uncured can truly show off in a live setting. It is incredibly sick to see how both these guys can scream and shred so well together.
Overall, All That Remains and Lacuna Coil brought a juggernaut of a tour to New York City for many metal fans to appreciate. There were plenty of fantastic bands to see in one glorious night, that’s for sure. Be sure to check out the rest of the tour dates! You don’t always see a tour package like this come around every so often!
