Rock Against Dystrophy 7/19/14
The Local community has seen its share of up’s and down’s, and there has been something that is causing quite a store within the independent radio community. Dj Turbo of Brooklyn’s own “Bullspike Radio”, has independently put together and operated an event called “Rock Against Dystrophy”. Now, both Dj Turbo and brother Jay Scorpion, who are both operators of Bullspike Radio AND are diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is a category under Muscular Dystrophy, have set up this benefit for the past five years. For the second time in its inception, New Jersey has called the benefit home but with a grander scale. With Crossroads, New Jersey Turbo has brought out the big guns like Mark Tornillo of the heavily acclaimed German band Accept and New Jersey’s own TT Quik (as well as David Deprietro), Bobby “Blitz” Ellesworth of New Jersey thrash metal band Overkill, Chris Cafferty of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Bob Pantella of Monster Magnet, Scott Metaxas of Prophet and Dan Watts of Bullet Boys. This had New Jersey written all over it and by God almighty they came out to party. With Tattoo Tony as host with the most, Local acts Lords of Mercy and A Need For Reason came out to open for the “R.A.D All-Stars” which included all the members stated above, to sing cover songs from many amazing acts such as Judas Priest, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and many more. The set-list can be viewed below along with the photo gallery of everyone involved. There is also a video of AC/DC’s “Back in Black” covered by the R.A.D All-Stars AND ALSO a Black Sabbath Cover which kicks freaking ass!
For all of the time I have known Dj Turbo, his Rock Against Dystrophy events have stood the test of time. Benefit shows are a dime a dozen now a day, and with consistency, I can see this one being stronger and continuously growing unto other areas of the United States. This show was amazing, with the star power and crowd needed to bring forth the concern and seriousness of Muscular Dystrophy. Not only this, but with this show coordinated by young men who HAVE Spinal Muscular Atrophy, there is NO REASON why the Rock & Roll community shouldn’t listen to the seriousness of this cause. I support and stand-by Bullspike Radio and my compatriots as they look to not break the mold, but to make a difference in this serious matter. Please check out Bullspike Radio and show your support as I do.
