The Butcher Babies invade Roseland Ballroom 10/18/13
Danzig began his 25th Anniversary tour with The following acts: A Pale Horse Named Death, Texas Hippie Coalition and then The Butcher Babies. As blunt as possible, I was instructed to ONLY shoot Butcher Babies. I had NO problems adhering to these instructions as I had zero interest in shooting Danzig due to his ULTRA STRICT instructions about press and or any type of media being allowed during his set. Maybe I will catch him one day, keyword is “MAYBE” The Butcher Babies were on my radar once Mayhem Festival 2013 rolled out. I first encountered these beautiful scream machines Heidi Shepherd and Carla Coates in the Mayhem Festival grounds in Hartford, CT back in July. The photos speak for themselves (Link: Butcher Babies at Mayhem 2013) This occasion I took extreme interest to catch their indoor set and observe the stage action in the historic Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan. Heidi and Carla are naturally photogenic, giving off many opportunities to capture amazing feats and poses for the three songs we are only allowed to shoot. They entire band makes it worth shooting and experiencing live. The complete array of blues and reds did not hinder my abilities this time around. Due to the MASSIVE stage space at Roseland, it was very simple to play and work with shadows and composing the frames necessary to co-exist with the lighting rigs above. The best parts were the florescent white lights mixing with the green’s and purple’s. THAT was where I managed to get my best shots of both women AND also the rest of the band. Towards the end of the set, Carla and Heidi made their way to the front of the barricades to sing and scream at fans who participated in the vocal barrage. They shook hands and gave high fives out to their loyalists and swayed new fans alike to their enjoyable personalities they hoist on stage. The set-list was NOT present on stage which was the difficult part of ascertaining what songs were played. For the most part, they played a majority of their music off the current “Goliath” album under Century Media Records. The songs played were “Magnolia Blvd.”, “I Smell a Massacre”, “Dead Poet”, “The DeathSurround”, and rounding off from their E.P were “National Bloody Anthem”, “Mr. SlowDeath,” and ” Jesus Needs More Babies for His War Machine” Check out the photos below and also the full Hi-Res gallery on Flickr.com
